What are the Rates of Homelessness in the United States?
Currently, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that there are over 553,000 cases of homelessness in the United States. That is over half a million people who currently do not have a place to call home. Some of these people may be living in shelters, in their cars, or in a vulnerable position out on the streets. Rates of homelessness are higher among veterans and for those who have mental illness.
These numbers also reflect children and youth who are living without a place to call home.
The highest numbers of homelessness are found in the states of New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Washington. New York City and Los Angeles top the list for cities with the highest rate of those living on the street. Some people may experience homelessness only for a night or two. Many may experience it for a significantly longer period.
And unfortunately, the numbers of people living without a home have been on the rise since 2018, after steadily declining for several years.
What can be done?
We know that there is not an easy solution, but we also know that every little bit counts. Whether it's helping someone get a hot meal for dinner that night or transporting someone to a job interview so that they can get back on their feet, everything we all can do to help is a step in the right direction. It is important to do everything that we can to help those faced with homelessness get back on their feet.
Ts 4 Hope is an organization committed to helping those who are hungry or homeless. Even though we accept donations of any amount, a donation of $25 or more means that you will receive one of our unique shirts as a thank you for helping. You can check out some of our previous posts or the website for more details on our goals and plans. We also provide a directory online that includes homeless resources in many US states.
Remember, every little bit that we do counts. And every time is the right time to start.
